Olho Biónico / Bionic Eye

Researchers in the US have are developing systems to partially restore vision to people that went blind due to retina degenerative diseases.
The most promissing (and spectacular) is a system works by implanting a chip inside the eye-ball. The chips works as digital camera that captures images in place of the damaged retina. The nerves "latch-on" naturally to the chip electrodes and feed the data right into the brain.
The limitations are the need to use special glasses that power the chip through lased. So far, this system can only produce black and white, low detail, images.
It should be available in Europe by 2013 and in the US later (due to the higher restrictions required for approval).
